JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) has become the de-facto standard for data interchange on the web. It is lightweight, easy to read, and supported by virtually every programming language. However, as applications scale, poor JSON practices can lead to significant performance bottlenecks.

1. Keep Keys Short

When transmitting millions of records, long key names (e.g., "customer_delivery_address_street" vs "addr_street") can add megabytes of overhead. While descriptive names are good for readability, consider the payload size for high-throughput APIs.

2. Flatten Your Structure

Deeply nested objects require more CPU cycles to parse and access. Where possible, flatten your data structure.

// Avoid this:
{
  "user": {
    "profile": {
      "settings": {
        "theme": "dark"
      }
    }
  }
}

// Prefer this:
{
  "user_theme": "dark"
}

3. Use Arrays Wisely

Arrays are efficient, but objects with ID keys are faster for lookups. Choose the right data structure for your access patterns.

"Premature optimization is the root of all evil, but payload optimization is necessary for scale."
